Blakes of Somersetshire

A family of Blakes appeared in church records in Somerset, early in the sixteenth century. Humphrey Blake, the head of the house, was said to be the son of John Blake of Calne in Wiltshire.

During his lifetime, Humphrey became the Lord of the Manor of Plainfield, Over Stowey, patron of the Church at Over Stowey and Aisholt, and was Mayor of Bridgwater.

St. Peter & St. Paul Over Stowey.

A few years before he died, Humphrey bought the adjoining manor of Tuxwell in 1555 from George Sydenham. Humphrey died on the 28th December 1558 and was buried at Over Stowey. His will was dated 19th November 1558 and proved at Taunton 11th May 1558.

Over-Stowey or Upper-Stowey is pleasantly situated on a gentle ascent on the eastern side of the Quantock hills. There are four hamlets in this parish and John Collinson`s description of the hamlets in 1791, could not have changed very much, from when Humphrey Blake lived there. Even to-day there is only a handful of houses surrounding the Church at Over Stowey.

Anne Blake the daughter of John Blake the elder was also a granddaughter of Humphrey Blake. She was probably named Anne after Humphrey’s wife. Anne married Thomas Saunders in 1575 at Over Stowey and nine children have been found from this marriage.  Their daughter Elizabeth Saunders married Henry Wolcot and Elizabeth and Henry with four of their children sailed to the New World in 1630, also on board was Elizabeth cousin Thomas Richards. William Blake is also reported to have sailed in 1635, probably on the ‘Hopewell’ as William Black. Black being a common form of spelling the name Blake, as is Blaque, Bleek, Blak, Blayk and Blick. William was the grandson of John Blake the elder and he settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts U.S.A..

                        2.         Adscombe, four houses.

                        3.         Ely Green, in which are eight houses.

                        4.         Plainsfield, containing eight houses, and one Mill.

                                                                     1791 John Collinson.

Plainsfield manor is situated a mile from Over Stowey Church and there in the great hall, the Blake arms are shown over the fireplace. The arms shown depict the Wiltshire Blake`s coat of arms, and shows the connection between the Somerset Blake`s and the Wiltshire Blake`s. An argent (silver), a chevron (looks like a lance-corporal`s stripe upside down) between three garbs (sheaf of grain) sable (together) and crest (part of the grant of arms) on a chapeau gules a velvet cap with vertical shading), turned up, ermine, a martlet (small bird) argent. (See cover) The arms were originally depicted in a memorial window in the Church of St. Mary Calne but destroyed about 1650. It is worth mentioning that through marriage an heiress may be entitled to bear her family’s arms and in this case her arms would be quartered with that of her husband, thus changing the design of the coat of arms.
