Blakes of Gordano & Weston –super-Mare.

This site is a memorial to the many generations of stone-masons of my family line, especially of my father who I watched, with the fascination of a child, as he used the skills which were handed down to him as his birthright.

During the late seventeenth and eighteenth century Britain underwent a massive change. The old acceptable methods of Agriculture changed as new ideas and methods took over. Open fields were enclosed and machinery became widely used. Machinery on the land meant less labour was required in the countryside. Many of the country workers went to the towns searching for new beginnings.

Improvements in road buildings and in the quality of new homes changed the face of the nation. In the towns, more and more houses were built, to meet the growing population. Major building developments in and around cities engulfed the surrounding landscape.

1801 * 'The population of Bristol, excluding the suburbs, estimated at 63,645'.

Bristol itself became the second largest city in the land using money earned from its successful slave trade and with dealings in the sugar, cotton,
chocolate and tobacco business. It did not hold this position long however because navigation through the Avon became difficult for the new large
ships. During this time the city added many Georgian developments in and around Bristol swallowing up many small villages, in the process.

1698 *'This year a pile of brick building was erected on Broad Key; the first brick building in this city.'
The square in the Marsh commenced building,'
1715 'St. James's Square (commenced in 1707) was completed this year.'
1721 ' A Chapel for the French Protestant built in Orchard-street.'
1759 'The design of opening and building Park-street, with great George-street and Charlotte-street, now
began to be entertained.'
1796 'A new Bridge, formerly Needless Bridge, erected across the Froom, from Broadmead to Duck and
Haulier's Lane, preparatory to the erection of Nelson-street.'
1820 'Aug 25, the old Goal of Newgate was evacuated, for the prison erected on the bank of the new river,
facing the junction of the Avon and the Froom.'
1840 saw the development of the railways and areas previously inaccessible became assessable to the working public. Higher standards of living, meant holidays were possible and areas such as Clevedon and Weston super Mare were developed as seaside resorts.

With all these new developments the stonemason became a much sought after worker and the Blakes were no exception.
The Blake family based near Portishead extended their area to include; Nailsea, Clevedon, Bristol, Weston super Mare and South Wales, where their skills were in high demand.

First Generation

----------------------------------------

1.      William BLAKE. Baptised  ca 1755. William died in Portbury, Som. on 6 Nov 1831, he was 76.

2.      My DNA results lead me to believe that William was born on the 4 Dec 1757 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, America. This fits in with the information I have collected on him previously. He probably arrived in England just after the American Revolution 1765-1783 and settled in Somerset as his family originally came from the area.

3.      The colonists who supported the American Revolution were called Americans or Patriots. Colonists who supported the British side were called Loyalists or Tories.13 American Colonies refused to submit to the authority of the King and Parliament of Great Britain and founded the independent United States. The revolution divided many families and many Loyalists relocated to Canada and Britain.

4.      William Blake would have been a Loyalist as he settled in Britain just after the revolution and did not return to the U.S.A because of his loyalty to the crown.  He left his family behind and could not marry Hester Lilly until his wife in the United States died.

5.      He now fits in to Admiral Blake’s tree. (see the Admiral’s family tree.)
